Honduras is an off-the-beaten path natural paradise, where you can still enjoy birding in vast natural spaces without the crowds. In many of the country's top birding hotspots you can be the only birding party on the trail. The natural spaces are ideal for birdwatching, nature tours and wildlife photography at your own pace.

Honduras overall enjoys a tropical climate, but also has very diverse micro-climates including tropical rain forests, pine & oak forests, cloud forests, coastal dune, lakes & rivers, pine savanna, mangroves, and tropical dry forest, which is home to the endemic Honduran Emerald hummingbird.
Best of all, the travel distances between different ecosystems are relatively short. This creates ideal birdwatching opportunities that allow you to visit multiple habitats for a varied bird list.

Honduras Birding Destination: With almost 800 bird species identified so far in a relatively small country, Honduras is a birder’s paradise. Pico Bonito National Park, Cuero & Salado Wildlife Refuge, the Lake Yojoa basin, and the Copan Valley are four of our featured destinations for birding, nature tours, and wildlife photography trips. A birdwatching tour combining these destinations will provide a good mix of ecosystems and target birds as well as a collage of the diverse cultural heritage of Honduras. All of birding and nature tours feature local guides, and stays in locally owned, independent hotels.
Our most popular birding tours are 7-day and 10-day trip itineraries, and they can be customized to your specific interests, birding style, and travel pace. Are you looking for a particular target bird or have some ideas in mind? We can also create a custom itinerary based on your specific preferences. This 7-day birding trip is a nature lover’s dream; as we spend every night of the trip in cozy lodges located inside national parks. Birding opportunities will be at your doorstep, literally!
We spend the first three nights in PANACAM LODGE birding around Lake Yojoa, a region with more than 315 documented species, in areas including the cloud forest of Santa Barbara National Park, Azul Meambar National Park, Los Naranjos Eco-archaeological park, and around El Cajon Dam in search of the endemic Honduran Emerald.
For the remaining three nights we move to the Caribbean coast, staying at THE LODGE & SPA AT PICO BONITO, a birding hotspot with more than 350 documented species, while birding Cuero & Salado Wildlife Refuge, Pico Bonito National Park and the surrounding areas.
We are committed to sustainable tourism practices, and we firmly believe that our nature tours and birdwatching trips should have a positive impact in the communities that we visit; therefore besides your full-time dedicated trip leader, we hire local birding guides in each location that we visit. This gives us up-to-date knowledge on the location, as well as creates job opportunities for locals with an incentive to conserve and protect the natural spaces.
We can run this trip as a private birdwatching tour for you at any time. The best time of year for good weather and bird variety is between December and March.
Coffee farms with tree shade cover in the highlands of Honduras are a very important habitat for Neotropical migratory birds and great places for birdwatching, photography, and nature tours. Many of the birds that you see in North America in the spring and summer will spend their winter in Central and South America. Therefore it is very important for us to protect and conserve their wintering habitats so that they can be healthy and ready for the flight back to their breeding grounds.
Enjoy a leisurely birdwatching tour through the coffee-growing highlands of Honduras. Great birding locations around Lake Yojoa, Santa Barbara National Park, Marcala, El Jilguero Reserve, and Copan.
During the trip we will be birding in tree-shade coffee farms, and in forests and open spaces near the coffee farms. In this slow paced birding tour, you will have a chance to meet coffee farmers to learn about growing, harvesting and processing quality coffee, and of course we will enjoy delicious, high altitude, shade grown coffee!
There are many things that we can do to help migratory birds. In our case, creating birding and nature tours that have a positive economic impact in the communities we visit is very important. We also organize events in the coffee growing regions to create awareness for the important link between birds and coffee, and to share the message that a healthy ecosystem for birds is a healthy ecosystem for humans.
What can you do to help migratory birds?
