Bay Islands

Back to all regions

The Bay Islands of Honduras are a jewel of the Caribbean Sea, renowned worldwide for their spectacular coral reefs, crystal-clear waters, and laid-back island atmosphere. Located on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second largest coral reef system in the world — the islands offer world-class diving and snorkeling alongside unique island birding opportunities.

Roatán

Roatán is the largest and most developed of the Bay Islands, with a well-established tourism infrastructure and an international airport. The island features excellent coral reef diving, beautiful beaches, and the Carambola Botanical Gardens, which attract a variety of bird species. Detailed birding information for this destination will be added soon.

Key Birding Hotspots

  • Carambola Botanical Gardens – island forest birds
  • Sandy Bay – coastal and forest edge species
  • Punta Gorda – Garifuna community and coastal birds

Utila

Utila is the smallest and most budget-friendly of the main Bay Islands, known as a world-class destination for whale shark encounters and affordable dive courses. The island has a relaxed atmosphere and unique island habitats. Detailed birding information for this destination will be added soon.

Key Birding Hotspots

  • Utila wetlands – waterbirds and mangrove species
  • Island forest fragments – endemic and island-restricted species

Guanaja

Guanaja is the most remote and least developed of the main Bay Islands, often called the "Island of Pines" for its distinctive pine-covered hills. The island has no roads and is accessible only by boat or small plane, giving it a truly wild character. Detailed birding information for this destination will be added soon.

Key Birding Hotspots

  • Guanaja pine forests – island-specific species
  • Coastal mangroves – waterbirds and kingfishers
  • Cayos Cochinos (nearby) – pristine reef and island birds
