Western Region
The Western Region of Honduras is a land of ancient Mayan heritage, colonial architecture, and spectacular highland landscapes. From the world-famous Copán archaeological site to the cloud forests of Celaque National Park, this region offers an extraordinary blend of cultural and natural wonders.
Copán Ruinas
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, the Copán Archaeological Site is considered one of the most important sites of the Mayan civilization. Abandoned in the early 10th century and rediscovered by Spanish explorer Diego García de Palacio in 1570, the vast public squares, citadel, temples, and ballcourts are a testament to the sophistication of the Copán Maya.
The surrounding Copán Valley is also excellent for birding, with the Scarlet Macaw — Honduras's national bird — being a highlight. The macaws nest in the ruins themselves and can be seen flying over the site throughout the day.

Gracias
For a time in the 16th century, Gracias was the Capital of Spanish Central America and today remains the gateway to the Colosuca Region, renowned for its beautiful Colonial architecture, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant culture. Baroque churches dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries remain, along with examples of colonial-era architecture.
Gracias is also the gateway to Celaque National Park, home to Cerro Las Minas, the highest peak in Honduras at 2,849 meters. The park's cloud forests are among the most pristine in Central America.
